## Role overview Sole engineering leadership role at a seed-funded AI edtech startup ($4M+ raised, 24 people) building multimodal models that read handwritten student work and tell teachers exactly where a student's thinking broke down. The product is used daily by Special Education teachers. You report directly to the CEO, with a real path to a co-founder-level role. ## What you'll do - Own and improve the chain of AI/ML models (computer vision, NLP, multimodal) analyzing handwritten student work - Audit and strengthen evaluation sets, model monitoring and performance observability - Expand the platform from math to ELA and science, taking proofs of concept to production - Deploy and run inference on in-house models (vLLM, SGLang) - Partner with the external full-stack engineering team (5-year partnership) to set priorities and push technical quality - Present the technical roadmap to the CEO, board, grantors and non-technical partners ## Compensation - $200K to $250K base (USD) - Competitive equity + benefits - Fully remote, US time zones (Eastern to Pacific). Candidates in the Americas or Europe are welcome if working US hours ## Requirements - 4 to 8 years of hands-on ML/AI development: building models, creating datasets, running experiments independently - At least one AI product shipped end to end, from proof of concept to production - Model deployment, inference and MLOps (AWS, GCP or Modal, CI/CD) - Clear communicator with non-technical stakeholders - Work authorization in your country of residence (no visa sponsorship) ## Nice to have - EdTech or social impact background (health, climate) - Experience managing external engineering contractors - Stack: Python, FastAPI, HuggingFace, WandB, Datadog ## Interview process 1. Intro call with Méroë Nguimbi, Humanup founder 2. 30-min screen with the outgoing engineering lead 3. Take-home assignment 4. 60-min technical review of your solution 5. 45-min final interview with the CEO
